If you’re in search of a free activity to wow the kids this Christmas holidays, nothing beats taking a tour of the best Christmas light displays in Adelaide. Here are a few of the must-see homes and streets where kids and adults alike will be amazed by the lights, decorations and festive spirit.
Ninth Avenue, St Peters plays host to an absolutely phenomenal light display, with pretty much the entire street participating in the event. From huge, sparkling reindeer to nativities and Santa, there are heaps of things to see and do here! Hop out of the car and take a slow stroll through this magical wonderland.
At 24 Edmonds Road, Angle Vale the owners have painstakingly put up more than ten thousand lights, as well as moving features, inflatables and a roof display. They’ve been running their display since 2002 and it improves every year, with inclusions such as Santa in his sleigh, Santa’s workshop and computerised light shows. Open from November 10th until New Year’s Eve, from 8.30 to 11pm each night, this one is a must-visit. There are also great displays on Whitelaws Court and Heathslip Road.
At the South Australian Brewing Company in Thebarton you’ll find the West End Brewery Riverbank Christmas Lights – a magical display, dotted along the lawns of the brewery. On December 1st each year the lights are switched on for this gorgeous display which is free for all South Australian families. In addition to the decorations, there are stands selling food and drinks, as well as carnival amusements for the kids. One of the highlights of the display is Moby Dick, who swims along the Torrens River towards the Port Road Bridge.
If you have young kids, a trip to Aralia Court, Reynella is sure to delight them. Visits from Santa, Mickey Mouse and Elmo have surprised attendees in previous years, in addition to the beautiful light displays on offer, so be sure to bring your camera along so you can capture the happy memories. There’s another fabulous display at 3 William Road, with lights and inflatables you can walk through with the kids, and on December 14 head to John Reynell Heritage Par for the Old Reynella Christmas Pageant.
At the Westminster School on Alison Avenue, Marion, Christmas truly is the most wonderful time of the year. Walk or drive through the thousands of lights, illuminated stained-glass window, stunning nativity mural and life-size snowmen that make up the display, which also includes the opportunity to meet Santa in his magical kingdom.
There are nightly Christmas carols and sing-a-longs, at what is one of Adelaide’s most celebrated community Christmas events. Festivities commence on December 14th and conclude December 20th, with the lights on each night from 8 to 10pm. Best of all, it’s totally free, with only a gold coin donation required if you wish to park on campus. On the way home, stop by 22 Avalon Road to check out their awesome lights.
